Differences between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort

Harry Potter vs. Lord Voldemort[edit]
Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort are the protagonist and antagonist, respectively, in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Their stories are deeply intertwined, beginning with a prophecy that foretold Voldemort's potential downfall at Harry's hands.[1] This led Voldemort to murder Harry's parents and attempt to kill the infant Harry, an act which ultimately set the prophecy in motion and forged a unique connection between them.[1]
Despite being depicted as polar opposites in their values and goals, the two characters share a number of similarities in their heritage and upbringing. Both were orphans raised by Muggles who were neglectful or abusive.[2][3][4] Both are of mixed wizarding and Muggle ancestry, a fact Harry accepts while Voldemort, a proponent of pure-blood supremacy, despises it.[5] Their parallel backgrounds highlight a central theme of the series: it is one's choices, rather than their circumstances, that determine their character.[5]

Divergence of Paths[edit]
A key difference between Harry and Voldemort lies in their capacity to love. Harry's ability to form strong friendships and his love for his parents provide him with both emotional strength and a powerful, ancient form of magical protection. His mother's sacrificial love is what saved him as a baby. Voldemort,[1] conceived under the influence of a love potion, is incapable of understanding or feeling love, a weakness Dumbledore identifies as his greatest flaw. He sees others not as friends, but as tools or obstacles. [3] Their fundamental difference is encapsulated in their relationship with death. Voldemort's terror of dying drives him to split his soul and commit atrocities in his quest for immortality. This[1] pursuit paradoxically dehumanizes him and leads to his eventual downfall. In contrast, Harry demonstrates immense courage by accepting his own mortality, walking willingly to what he believes is his death to save others. This act of self-sacrifice is presented as the ultimate triumph over Voldemort's fear-driven philosophy.[1]
