Difference between Claritin and Claritin D
Claritin and Claritin D are both antihistamines. Antihistamines are drugs used to treat allergy symptoms such as runny nose sneezing. They both contain Loratadine and are available in generic versions and OTC, i.e., over-the-counter, as they don't need a prescription from the doctor.
But, they differ in the sense that Claritin blocks the action of histamine, which is a chemical-hormonal substance that causes the symptoms of these allergies. Claritin D treats stuffy nose medically known as nasal congestion as it lowers inflammation caused by allergies.
Claritin[edit]
It is also known as Loratadine, classified as a non-drowsy Antihistamine that treats allergy symptoms and redness and itching caused by hives. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergies such as respiratory allergies or hay fever. Airborne allergens such as pollen dust are the causes of hay fever as they activate the release of histamine, which causes these allergies. Claritin helps to relieve these symptoms by blocking the effect of histamine.
Claritin D[edit]
It is known as Claritin Decongestant as it is the combination of Loratadine and Pseudoephedrine, an antihistamine and decongestant. Hay fever caused by airborne allergens can further result in nasal congestion swelling of nasal passages. Claritin D is used to treat allergies, improve breathing, and relieves stuffy nose. The symptoms will begin to relieve within 1 to 3 hours when used.
