Coffee vs. Espresso[edit]
Coffee is a broad term for a brewed beverage prepared from roasted coffee beans.[1] Espresso is a specific method of brewing coffee by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water through finely ground coffee beans under high pressure.[2][3][4] While all espresso is coffee, the preparation method creates significant differences in the final product.[4] The primary distinctions lie in the brewing mechanics, grind size, concentration, and serving size.[5]

The most significant difference between coffee and espresso is the use of pressure. Standard drip coffee is made by allowing hot water to pass through a bed of coffee grounds, with gravity pulling the liquid through a filter. Other methods like a French press involve immersing the grounds in water for several minutes. In contrast, an espresso machine uses a pump to force hot water through a tightly packed "puck" of fine coffee grounds at approximately 9 bars of atmospheric pressure, or about 130 pounds per square inch. This high-pressure, rapid extraction is fundamental to creating the characteristic qualities of espresso.
Grind and Preparation[edit]
The brewing method dictates the required grind size. Drip coffee and French press use medium to coarse grinds, which allow water to flow through or steep evenly over a longer period. If the grind is too fine for these methods, it can result in over-extraction, leading to a bitter taste. Espresso requires a very fine grind to create enough resistance against the high-pressure water. This fine[4] consistency increases the surface area of the coffee, allowing for a fast and efficient extraction of oils and solids within about 20 to 30 seconds.
Concentration and Flavor[edit]
The result of the high-pressure brewing process is a highly concentrated beverage. An espresso shot typically contains between 10–13% extracted coffee material, whereas a cup of drip coffee contains less than 2%. This concentration gives espresso a much thicker body, a more intense flavor, and a velvety texture. It is topped[5] with a layer of reddish-brown foam called crema, which is composed of emulsified coffee oils and carbon dioxide bubbles and is a signature of a well-made shot. Regular drip[2] coffee is more diluted, resulting in a lighter body and often allowing for more subtle and nuanced flavors to be perceived.
Caffeine[5] Content[edit]
A common misconception is that espresso contains more caffeine than coffee. While espresso is more concentrated, the serving size is much smaller. Ounce for ounce, espresso has significantly more caffeine, with approximately 63 mg per 1 oz shot. A typical 8 oz cup of drip coffee, by comparison, contains about 12-16 mg of caffeine per ounce. However, due to the larger serving size, a standard cup of drip coffee has a higher total amount of caffeine, typically around 95 mg, compared to the 63 mg in a single espresso shot.
